Ceylon Spinach

Ceylon Spinach

Ceylon spinach (Basella alba or Basella rubra), also known as Ceylon, vine spinach, and Indian spinach, is a leafy green vegetable commonly grown in tropical regions. Unlike regular spinach, it is a climbing vine with thick, fleshy, and slightly mucilaginous (slimy) leaves, which become more pronounced when cooked. It has a mild, slightly tangy flavor and is often used in stir-fries, soups, curries, and salads. Rich in vitamins A, C, and iron, as well as antioxidants, Ceylon spinach is highly nutritious and valued for its heat resistance, making it a popular alternative to traditional spinach in warm climates. The plant comes in two varieties: Basella alba (green-stemmed) and Basella rubra (red-stemmed), both offering similar taste and benefits.
